Primary School Kastanienallee
Velbert, Germany
The new Kastanienallee primary school and two-court sports hall were built on a former sports field. The topography of the surrounding area gives the site a special character: although you are in the middle of an urban structure, you enter a protected and green space. The new building uses and strengthens the existing qualities of the site with its building cubature and positioning. The building can be read as a “tangram”: like a tangram, the new primary school is made up of different parts - the new site on Kastanienallee, the elementary school on Sontumer Strasse, Dellerstrasse and Nordstrasse - to form a self-contained and individual building.
The perforated façade of the building was designed with a clinker brick in two different colors. An aluminum curtain wall in the form of colored, triangular elements further differentiates the façade. This means that the different areas can be clearly identified from the outside with their different shades of green, red, blue and yellow.
The colorful shapes can also be found inside the new building. They accompany the children through their school day and help them find their way around the building. The entrance area is characterized by large-scale glazing, which makes the heart of the building a light-flooded space that can be used and experienced in a variety of ways. The learning environments offer different qualities of space with various open areas, differentiation and retreat rooms.
